Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Optic Cable

Begin by removing the outer jacket of the fiber cable using a fiber optic jacket stripper, exposing the aramid (Kevlar) strength members and the inner fiber strands. Cut and remove the Kevlar strands with specialized cutters, then strip the buffer coating from the fiber to expose the bare glass core. Clean the fiber thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove any debris or oils, and use a fiber cleaver to create a precise, perpendicular cut on the fiber ends .

Step 2: Choose the Splicing Method

There are two main splicing methods:

  • Fusion Splicing: Uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the fiber ends together, creating a permanent, low-loss joint with minimal back reflection. This method is preferred for long-haul or high-performance networks and is highly reliable inside junction boxes .
  • Mechanical Splicing: Aligns the fiber ends in a splice unit using an index-matching gel or epoxy. This method is faster and suitable for temporary connections or field repairs, though it introduces slightly higher signal loss than fusion splicing .

Step 3: Perform the Splice

For fusion splicing, insert the prepared fibers into the fusion splicer, which automatically aligns the cores and applies the electric arc to weld them. For mechanical splicing, carefully position the fibers in the splice unit, ensuring proper alignment and light transmission through the index-matching gel. Verify the splice quality using an optical power meter or visual fault locator if available .

Step 4: Protect the Splice

Place the completed splice into a splice tray inside the junction box. Secure the fibers to prevent movement, and ensure the tray or closure is sealed to protect against moisture, dust, and mechanical stress. Proper organization of fibers within the box prevents bending beyond the minimum bend radius, which could degrade signal quality .

Step 5: Final Checks

After splicing, test the optical path for insertion loss and continuity. Label the fibers and document the splice location for future maintenance. Ensure the junction box is closed securely and mounted in a location that minimizes environmental exposure . By following these steps, technicians can achieve reliable, low-loss fiber optic splices inside junction boxes, whether for permanent network installations or temporary field repairs.
