Identifying live and neutral wires in the distribution box

In a distribution box, live (hot) wires connect to the circuit breakers, while neutral wires connect to the neutral bus bar.

Live (Hot) Wires

Live wires, also called phase or hot wires, carry electrical current from the power source to the circuits in your home or building. In a standard distribution box:

• They are typically black, red, or yellow in color, depending on the phase and local wiring standards .
• Each live wire is connected to the input terminal of a circuit breaker, which protects the circuit from overloads or short circuits .
• Wiring between the main circuit breaker and branch circuit breakers usually runs along the left side of the distribution box, while outgoing wires to the circuits exit on the right .

Neutral Wires

Neutral wires provide a return path for current back to the power source and are essential for completing the electrical circuit:

• They are usually white, gray, or blue depending on local standards .
• Inside the distribution box, neutral wires are connected to the neutral bus bar, a metallic strip mounted on insulating standoffs along the side or bottom of the panel .
• Each branch circuit has its neutral wire stripped and secured under a single terminal screw on the bus bar to ensure a firm, low-resistance connection .
• Only one neutral wire should be connected per terminal to prevent loose connections or overheating .

Safety and Layout Considerations

• Ground wires (green or bare copper) are connected to a separate grounding bus bar to prevent electrical shocks .
• Wires should be neatly bound with plastic ties and routed to minimize bends or intersections .
• Proper labeling of phases and neutral wires is recommended for safety and maintenance .
• Always ensure the distribution box is de-energized before inspecting or working on wiring to avoid electric shock .
