A PoE switch port allows a network switch to deliver both data and electrical power over a single Ethernet cable to compatible devices.

What a PoE Port Does

A PoE (Power over Ethernet) port on a switch functions as both a network connection and a power source. Managed vs Unmanaged PoE Ports

• Managed PoE ports allow network administrators to monitor power usage, enable or disable individual ports, and configure features like VLANs or port prioritization. They provide real-time status and alerts for overload, short circuits, or high temperature .
• Unmanaged PoE ports are plug-and-play, automatically supplying power to connected devices without configuration. Some may include an LCD display showing power usage per port .

Configuring and Controlling a PoE Port

On a managed PoE switch, you can:

1. Enable or disable power on specific ports to control which devices receive electricity.
2. Monitor power consumption to ensure the total power budget is not exceeded.
3. Set priority levels for critical devices to maintain operation during high load.
4. Check port status for connectivity, speed, and power delivery. For unmanaged switches, the ports automatically provide power to compatible devices, but you cannot individually control or monitor them .

Practical Considerations

• Total power budget: Ensure the switch can supply enough power for all connected devices. For example, a 250W switch can power multiple devices, but high-power devices may require careful planning .
• Port count: Choose a switch with enough PoE ports for your devices. Common options include 8, 16, or 24 ports .
• Network speed: Most PoE switches support Gigabit speeds, which is sufficient for most IP cameras and access points . Using PoE ports effectively simplifies network setup, reduces cable clutter, and allows devices to be installed in locations without nearby power outlets .
