Fiber Bragg grating array sensor

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) arrays enable high-precision, distributed sensing of strain, temperature, and other physical parameters along optical fibers, with applications in structural health monitoring, aerospace, and environmental diagnostics.

Operating Principle

FBG sensors consist of periodic variations in the refractive index inscribed along the core of an optical fiber. Each grating reflects a specific wavelength of light, known as the Bragg wavelength, which shifts in response to strain, temperature, or other perturbations. By monitoring these wavelength shifts, FBG arrays can provide distributed measurements along a single fiber, allowing multiple sensing points to be interrogated simultaneously .

Array Configurations

FBG arrays are typically implemented in multiplexed configurations, where multiple gratings are inscribed at different locations along a fiber. Common approaches include:

  • Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM): Each FBG reflects a unique wavelength, enabling simultaneous monitoring of multiple points .
  • Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM): Pulsed light is used to distinguish reflections from different gratings based on travel time.
  • Hybrid WDM-TDM: Combines both methods for higher sensor density and longer fiber lengths. Arrays can be linear or distributed, with spacing tailored to the application, such as 10 m spacing for wind turbine towers in Arctic climates .

Sensitivity and Enhancements

Recent advances have improved FBG array sensitivity and multi-parameter detection:

  • Exceptional Point (EP) engineering: Aligning FBGs near EPs in non-Hermitian photonic systems can enhance sensitivity by nearly an order of magnitude for temperature and strain measurements .
  • Temperature-strain decoupling: Sensitivity matrix approaches and co-located thermocouples allow accurate simultaneous detection of multiple perturbations .
  • Advanced fabrication: Techniques like femtosecond laser inscription improve grating precision, durability, and performance in harsh environments .

Applications

FBG arrays are widely used in:

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM): Bridges, dams, high-rise buildings, and wind turbines benefit from real-time strain and temperature monitoring, enabling predictive maintenance and reduced downtime .
  • Aerospace: Monitoring aircraft structures and composite materials for stress and fatigue.
  • Environmental sensing: Detecting temperature variations, pressure changes, and acoustic events in remote or harsh environments.
  • Biomedical diagnostics: Measuring subtle physiological changes with high precision .

Data Integration and Analysis

Modern FBG array systems often integrate edge computing and AI models, such as convolutional-recurrent neural networks (CRNNs), to predict cumulative damage indices and simulate long-term environmental impacts . This enables audit-ready, reproducible monitoring networks for compliance-sensitive applications.

Advantages and Challenges

Advantages:

  • High sensitivity and resolution
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference
  • Capability for distributed, multi-point sensing
  • Long-term durability with proper packaging Challenges:
  • Temperature-strain cross-sensitivity
  • High cost of interrogation systems
  • Need for precise calibration and signal processing for large arrays FBG array sensing continues to evolve, with ongoing research focusing on enhanced sensitivity, scalable multiplexing, and integration with smart monitoring systems for real-time, high-precision applications .
