Components of the Optical Access Network Module

The main components of an Optical Access Network Module are the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Unit/Terminal (ONU/ONT), and the Optical Distribution Network (ODN), each serving distinct roles in signal transmission and service delivery.

Optical Line Terminal (OLT)

The OLT is the central device located at the service provider's central office or aggregation point. It functions as the network controller, converting, framing, and transmitting signals to the PON. Key roles include:

  • Aggregating multiple service signals and distributing them to end users.
  • Managing bandwidth allocation according to Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreements (SLA).
  • Providing uplink connectivity to higher-layer networks and routing incoming user signals.
  • Supporting device management, security, and configuration functions. Typical OLT subcomponents include a rack, Control and Switching Module (CSM), EPON Link Module (ELM or PON card), power modules, and fans, often with redundancy and hot-swapping capabilities for reliability .

Optical Network Unit/Terminal (ONU/ONT)

The ONU/ONT is the customer-premises device that interfaces with the OLT through the ODN. It converts optical signals into electrical signals for end-user devices and aggregates multiple user services. Functions include:

  • Receiving downstream data selectively from the OLT and transmitting upstream data.
  • Multiplexing user and service data, buffering, and scheduling transmissions.
  • Providing Ethernet Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions, IPTV, and voice services. ONUs can be classified based on deployment:
  • Card-type ONU: Used in FTTC, installed in street cabinets or pole-mounted enclosures.
  • Box-type ONU: Used in FTTB, installed inside buildings to serve multiple users.
  • Residential ONU/ONT: Used in FTTH, installed at the user's home .

Optical Distribution Network (ODN)

The ODN is the passive optical infrastructure connecting the OLT to ONUs/ONTs. It includes optical fibers, connectors, passive splitters, and auxiliary components. The ODN is divided into five segments:

  • Feeder fiber: From the central office to the optical distribution point, serving as the trunk fiber.
  • Distribution point: Allocates fiber to nearby user areas.
  • Distribution fiber: Connects the distribution point to the optical access point.
  • Access point: Provides connection to the drop fiber.
  • Drop fiber: Connects the access point to the ONU/ONT at the user premises. The ODN may use primary or secondary splitting to distribute optical signals efficiently to multiple users, ensuring scalability and reliability .

Summary

In an optical access network, the OLT acts as the central controller, the ODN provides the passive transport medium, and the ONU/ONT serves as the edge device delivering services to users. Together, these components enable high-speed, reliable broadband services for FTTH, FTTB, and FTTC deployments, supporting data, voice, and video applications.
