What is a Protective Relay?

A protective relay is an automatic control and measurement device used in power systems to detect abnormal conditions such as overloads, short circuits, voltage imbalances, or frequency deviations. When a relay senses that a parameter exceeds its preset threshold, it sends a trip signal to a circuit breaker or other interrupting device to isolate the faulty section, preventing equipment damage and maintaining system stability . Relays do not interrupt current directly; they rely on instrument transformers (CTs and PTs) to measure system quantities and operate the trip circuit .

Working Principle

Protective relays operate through a decision chain: sensing → relay logic → trip output → breaker operation → isolation. The relay continuously monitors electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, impedance, or differential values. When a fault occurs, the relay closes its contacts, completing the trip coil circuit of the breaker, which then disconnects the faulty section . Key parameters include pickup value (threshold for operation), reset value, and operating time (time from fault detection to breaker trip), .
