Fiber Optic Cable Junction Box Fusion Steps

Fusion splicing in a fiber optic junction box involves careful preparation, precise cleaving, splicing with a fusion splicer, and secure placement of fibers to ensure low-loss, durable connections.

1. Safety and Workspace Preparation

Before starting, ensure personal protection: wear high-rated safety goggles and cut-resistant gloves to prevent injury from glass shards. Use anti-static mats or wrist straps to protect sensitive splicer electronics. Verify that the fusion splicer is clean, electrodes are in good condition, and power supply is stable .

2. Cable and Fiber Preparation

  • Strip the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable using a cable slitter, exposing the buffer tube.
  • Strip the fiber coating carefully (typically 250µm for single-mode fibers) without bending or twisting the fiber. Recommended strip length is 10–20 mm depending on the splicer specifications .
  • Clean the fiber ends with lint-free wipes soaked in 99%+ isopropyl alcohol, wiping from the coating edge to the cleave tip in a single stroke. Use a fiber cleaning pen for stubborn residues .

3. Fiber Cleaving

  • Use a precision fiber cleaver to create a flat, mirror-like end face.
  • Inspect under a microscope or the splicer's built-in camera to ensure no chips, scratches, or contamination. A poor cleave can cause high splice loss or failure .

4. Fusion Splicing

  • Open the fusion splicer's clamps and place each fiber in the V-groove, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Close the clamps gently; do not force the fiber.
  • Initiate the fusion arc to weld the fibers together. The splicer will automatically align and fuse the fibers, creating a continuous optical path with minimal reflection and attenuation .
  • Inspect the splice using the splicer's loss estimation or microscope to confirm quality.

5. Protecting the Splice

  • Slide a splice protection sleeve over the fused fiber and heat-shrink it using the splicer's heater or a separate oven. This provides mechanical protection and strain relief .

6. Organizing Fibers in the Junction Box

  • Carefully place the spliced fibers into the junction box trays, following the manufacturer's routing guidelines to maintain proper bend radius (>30 mm) and avoid stress on the fibers.
  • Secure the fibers with clips or holders inside the box to prevent movement.
  • Seal the junction box according to specifications to protect against environmental factors such as moisture, dust, and temperature changes .

7. Final Checks

  • Verify all splices for low insertion loss and proper alignment.
  • Ensure the junction box is fully closed and labeled for future maintenance.
  • Dispose of fiber scraps safely in a dedicated fiber waste container . Following these steps ensures high-performance, durable fiber optic connections within a junction box, minimizing signal loss and maintaining network reliability.
