How to configure an optical fiber optic switch

Optical fiber switches can be configured via web GUI, I2C interface, or parallel/serial interfaces, with settings including channel selection, loop sequences, IP addresses, and operational timing.

General Configuration

Optical fiber switches allow you to control the flow of light signals between fibers. The main settings depend on the switch type (mechanical, MEMS, solid-state) and the control interface:

  • Channel Selection: Switches can be set to route signals from specific input channels to output channels. For example, MEMS 8x8 switches allow you to define the input/output mapping and create sequences that loop through multiple channels .
  • Loop Sequences: You can configure the switch to cycle through multiple states, specifying the duration for each state. After completing a loop, the switch can either stop or continue looping .
  • Timing Constraints: Some switches, like LEONI eol series, require a minimum delay (e.g., 6 ms) between switching operations to ensure proper signal stabilization .

Control Interfaces

  1. Web GUI (Network-based):
    • Connect the switch to a computer via Ethernet.
    • Assign a static IP address and ensure the computer is in the same subnet.
    • Access the GUI using the default credentials (e.g., admin/admin) to configure channels, loops, and monitor input/output power in real-time .
  2. I2C Interface:
    • Switches operate as I2C slaves with standard Philips specifications.
    • You can query the current I2C address or set a new address (e.g., i2c15 sets address 15).
    • The address is stored in flash memory and persists after power-off .
    • Only standard bitrates up to 100 kBit are supported, and the switch can only receive data, not transmit .
  3. Parallel/Serial Interfaces:
    • Some switches support TTL-level parallel or serial control.
    • Data pins correspond to specific channels, and strobe signals may be optional depending on the configuration .

Network and Operational Settings

  • IP Configuration: Disable DHCP and assign a static IP, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server to ensure proper GUI access .
  • Power and Status Indicators: Ensure the switch is powered on and LEDs indicate operational status before configuring channels .
  • Environmental Considerations: For industrial or outdoor use, select switches rated for temperature tolerance, dust, and moisture resistance .

Best Practices

  • Use compatible transceivers and fiber cables to avoid link instability or damage .
  • Verify the polish type and connector type of the fiber to maintain low optical return loss and prevent errors .
  • Monitor input/output power during operation to ensure proper signal levels .
  • Follow manufacturer-specific manuals for pin configurations, timing, and interface commands . By carefully setting the channel mapping, loop sequences, control interface parameters, and network settings, you can ensure reliable and efficient operation of optical fiber switches across various applications, from data centers to industrial networks .
