Distribution box wire number and color

Distribution box wiring uses standardized color codes and numbering to identify live, neutral, and ground conductors, ensuring safety and compliance with IEC and NEC standards.

Wire Colors by Function

AC Systems (IEC Standard, Europe, UK, and many international projects):

  • Live (Phase) wires: Brown (single-phase), Red, Yellow, Blue (three-phase)
  • Neutral wire: Blue
  • Protective Earth (Ground): Green/Yellow striped
  • Optional numbering: Phases may be labeled L1, L2, L3; neutral as N; earth as PE AC Systems (NEC Standard, USA, Canada):
  • Live (Hot) wires: Black, Red, Blue (three-phase), or any dark color for single-phase
  • Neutral wire: White or Gray
  • Ground wire: Green, Green/Yellow, or bare copper DC Systems:
  • Positive (+): Red
  • Negative (−): Black
  • Ground: Green or Green/Yellow

Wire Numbering in Distribution Boxes

  • Phase identification: L1, L2, L3 for three-phase circuits
  • Neutral: N
  • Protective Earth: PE
  • Circuit-specific numbering: Each outgoing circuit may have a unique number for easier tracing and maintenance, often printed on the wire or marked on terminal blocks

Safety and Compliance

  • IEC 60446 standardizes wire colors and terminal markings to prevent miswiring, reduce troubleshooting time, and ensure global interoperability .
  • NEC and CEC standards in North America provide similar guidance, emphasizing correct identification of live, neutral, and ground wires .
  • Using proper color codes and numbering minimizes shock hazards, fire risks, and installation errors .

Practical Tips

  • Always verify local regulations, as some countries may have slight variations in color codes .
  • Label wires clearly in distribution boxes to match terminal markings.
  • Use color-coded insulation and numbered tags for multi-phase or complex circuits to simplify maintenance and ensure safety. By following these standardized wire colors and numbering conventions, electricians and engineers can maintain safe, efficient, and compliant distribution box installations .
