A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is a segment of optical fiber with a periodic variation in refractive index that reflects specific wavelengths of light while transmitting others, making it a precise optical filter and sensor.

Structure and Principle

An FBG consists of a short section of optical fiber where the refractive index of the core is periodically modulated along its length, forming a wavelength-specific dielectric mirror . When light travels through the fiber, only wavelengths that satisfy the Bragg condition are reflected, while all other wavelengths pass through. The reflected wavelength, called the Bragg wavelength, depends on the effective refractive index of the fiber core and the grating period . This principle relies on Fresnel reflection at the interfaces of alternating refractive indices .

Fabrication Techniques

FBGs are typically inscribed using ultraviolet (UV) laser light, which creates a permanent periodic pattern in the fiber core . Early methods used visible lasers along the fiber axis, while modern techniques employ transverse holographic inscription, where the interference pattern of UV light from the side forms the grating . The grating period is carefully controlled to reflect the desired wavelength.

Sensing Applications

FBGs are widely used as optical sensors due to their sensitivity to strain, temperature, and pressure . When the fiber is stretched or compressed, the spacing between the grating points changes, shifting the Bragg wavelength. Similarly, temperature variations alter the refractive index and grating period, also affecting the reflected wavelength. By monitoring these shifts with an optical interrogator, precise measurements of physical parameters can be obtained. FBGs are immune to electromagnetic interference and suitable for harsh or explosive environments .

Optical and Photonics Applications

Beyond sensing, FBGs serve as inline optical filters, wavelength-specific reflectors, and components in laser systems . They can manipulate spectral and temporal properties of light, enabling applications in telecommunications, chirped pulse amplification, and laser oscillators. Their compact, fiber-integrated design allows replacement of bulky free-space optics without compromising performance .
