Relay protection overvoltage start

Overvoltage relays operate by continuously monitoring system voltage and initiating a trip when the voltage exceeds a preset threshold for a defined time, protecting equipment from damage.

Principle of Operation

An overvoltage relay is a protective device designed to detect excessive voltage in a power system and trigger corrective action to prevent equipment damage caused by transient or sustained overvoltage conditions, such as lightning strikes, switching surges, or sudden load changes . The relay continuously monitors the system voltage, and when the voltage exceeds a preset limit, it activates a trip signal to isolate the affected section of the system .

Types of Overvoltage Relays

  1. Electromagnetic Relays: The relay coil is energized by the system voltage. When the voltage exceeds the set value, the magnetic field moves a plunger or armature, closing or opening contacts to trigger a trip or alarm .
  2. Static/Electronic Relays: These relays use electronic components like operational amplifiers, comparators, and transistors. They continuously monitor voltage and activate a trip signal when the threshold is crossed .
  3. Electromechanical Disc Relays: A rotating aluminum disc is subjected to forces from voltage-induced currents in the relay coils. When the voltage exceeds the set point, the disc rotates to operate the contacts .

Overvoltage Start and Time Delay

The overvoltage start principle involves two key parameters:

  • Voltage Set Point: The relay is set to a voltage slightly above the normal operating voltage (e.g., +5% of system voltage). If the system voltage exceeds this value, the relay prepares to operate .
  • Time Delay: To avoid nuisance tripping from transient spikes, a time delay (typically 0.1 to 1.6 seconds) is applied. Only if the voltage remains above the set point for this duration does the relay send a trip signal to the circuit breaker .

Applications

Overvoltage relays are commonly used in:

  • Transformer outgoing panels and LT panels to prevent insulation failure or winding damage .
  • Synchronous generators and alternators to protect against overfluxing, core saturation, or AVR malfunctions .
  • Feeder protection in distribution networks to isolate sections experiencing high voltage .

Coordination with Circuit Breakers

When the relay operates, it sends a tripping signal to the associated circuit breaker. In multi-stage protection schemes, stage 1 may trip the grid breaker, while stage 2 trips the generator breaker, ensuring selective isolation and system stability .

Summary

The overvoltage start principle ensures that electrical equipment is protected from harmful voltage excursions by continuously monitoring voltage, applying a preset threshold and time delay, and coordinating with circuit breakers to isolate the affected section. This principle is essential for maintaining the safety, reliability, and longevity of power system components .
