Multimode fiber and few-mode fiber

Few-mode fiber is a specialized type of multimode fiber that supports only a small number of guided modes, typically between 2 and 20, unlike standard multimode fiber which supports many more modes.

Core Differences

Multimode fiber (MMF) has a relatively large core, usually 50 µm or 62.5 µm, allowing many light modes to propagate simultaneously. This makes it suitable for short-distance, high-capacity links, such as within data centers or buildings, but it suffers from modal dispersion, which limits bandwidth over longer distances . Few-mode fiber (FMF), on the other hand, is designed to support a small, controlled number of modes, often ranging from 2 to around 20. For example, a two-mode fiber may have LP01 and LP11 modes, which, when considering polarization and orientation, can result in six distinct modes . FMF sits between single-mode and multimode fibers, combining some advantages of both: it reduces nonlinear effects and allows for mode-division multiplexing to increase transmission capacity .

Applications

  • Multimode fiber: Short-reach links, high-speed LANs, and intra-building connections where cost and ease of connection are priorities .
  • Few-mode fiber: Advanced telecommunications and research applications, including mode-division multiplexing for higher data throughput and large mode area fibers to reduce nonlinearities in high-power systems .

Key Technical Considerations

  • Mode Count: MMF supports many modes (tens to hundreds), while FMF supports only a few, carefully controlled modes .
  • Differential Mode Delay: FMF often uses graded-index profiles to minimize differential mode delay, which is critical for high-speed multiplexed transmission .
  • Nonlinear Effects: FMF can tolerate or exploit a small number of higher-order modes to reduce nonlinearities, whereas standard MMF may experience more modal dispersion and pulse broadening .

Summary

While few-mode fiber is technically a type of multimode fiber, it is distinct because it supports far fewer modes, enabling specialized applications like mode-division multiplexing and high-power transmission with reduced nonlinear effects. Standard multimode fiber, by contrast, is optimized for general short-distance data transmission with many modes and simpler deployment.
