PID Photoionization Sensor Module

A PID sensor module detects volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other ionizable gases using ultraviolet (UV) light, providing rapid, sensitive, and real-time measurements.

Overview

A Photoionization Detector (PID) sensor module is designed to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and certain inorganic gases at very low concentrations, typically in the parts-per-billion (ppb) to parts-per-million (ppm) range . These sensors are widely used in industrial safety, environmental monitoring, and chemical processing due to their high sensitivity and fast response .

Working Principle

  1. UV Ionization: The sensor uses a UV lamp (commonly 10.0 eV, 10.6 eV, or 11.7 eV) to ionize gas molecules whose ionization potential (IP) is below the lamp energy .
  2. Ion Current Generation: Ionized molecules release electrons, forming positive ion–electron pairs.
  3. Charge Collection: An electric field drives these charges to electrodes, producing a measurable ion current proportional to the gas concentration.
  4. Signal Conversion: The ion current is converted to a concentration reading, often calibrated against a reference gas like isobutylene, with response factors (RFs) applied for other compounds .

Detectable Compounds

PID sensors can detect a broad range of VOCs, including:

  • Aromatics: benzene, toluene, xylene
  • Ketones: acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)
  • Alcohols: ethanol, isopropanol
  • Esters: ethyl acetate
  • Aliphatics, olefins, chlorinated solvents, and process solvents used in coatings, printing, and adhesives Compounds with high ionization potential, such as methane, are generally not detected by standard 10.6 eV PIDs .

Features and Advantages

  • High sensitivity and fast response for real-time monitoring
  • Compact and durable design, suitable for portable or embedded applications
  • Long lifespan, often exceeding 8,000 hours, with anti-contamination and humidity-resistant designs
  • Wide measurement range and customizable configurations for industrial or laboratory use
  • Lightweight and user-friendly, ideal for fieldwork and environmental safety monitoring

Applications

  • Industrial safety: Detecting hazardous VOCs in refineries, chemical plants, and confined spaces
  • Environmental monitoring: Air quality assessment and pollution detection
  • Process control: Monitoring solvent emissions in coatings, printing, and adhesives
  • Personal safety: Portable detectors for workers in hazardous environments

Integration and Calibration

PID sensor modules can be integrated into portable detectors, fixed gas monitoring systems, or centralized control panels. Regular calibration with reference gases ensures accuracy and reliability, and response factors must be applied for specific target compounds . In summary, a PID photoionization sensor module is a versatile, sensitive, and fast-responding device essential for detecting VOCs and other ionizable gases in industrial, environmental, and safety applications, providing real-time data to protect human health and ensure regulatory compliance.
