Classification by Operating Principle

  1. Electromechanical Relays: Use moving parts and electromagnetic forces to detect faults; traditional and widely used in older systems .
  2. Static Relays: Employ electronic components without moving parts, offering faster response and higher accuracy .
  3. Numerical (Digital) Relays: Microprocessor-based relays that provide multifunction protection, monitoring, and communication capabilities .

Classification by Function

  1. Overcurrent Relay: Operates when current exceeds a preset limit; can be instantaneous or time-delayed .
  2. Differential Relay: Compares currents at two points and trips if a difference is detected; commonly used for transformers and generators .
  3. Distance Relay: Measures impedance to detect faults along transmission lines .
