35kV busbar PT connection

A 35kV busbar PT is a combination of a 35kV busbar and a Potential Transformer (PT) used to safely measure and distribute high-voltage electrical energy.

35kV Busbar

A 35kV busbar is a critical node in a medium-voltage power system, operating at 35 kilovolts, that collects and distributes electrical energy between generators, transformers, and outgoing feeders . It serves as a central connection point, allowing multiple circuits to share a common voltage level. Busbars can be constructed as single or sectionalized systems and may use tubular or solid metal bars, typically made of copper or aluminum, to handle high currents efficiently . They are designed with sufficient insulation, air clearance, and mechanical support to withstand electrical and thermal stresses.

Potential Transformer (PT)

A Potential Transformer (PT), also called a voltage transformer, is an instrument transformer that steps down high voltage from the busbar to a lower, safe level suitable for metering, monitoring, and protection devices . PTs are essential for providing accurate voltage measurements to control systems and protective relays without exposing personnel or equipment to the full 35kV. They are typically housed in a PT cabinet, which may include circuit breakers, surge arresters, and modular compartments separating primary and secondary circuits for safety and maintenance .

Function of a 35kV Busbar PT

The 35kV busbar PT assembly integrates the busbar and PTs to:

  • Distribute electrical energy efficiently across multiple feeders or transformers.
  • Provide voltage measurement for metering and monitoring systems.
  • Enable protection by supplying accurate voltage signals to relays that detect faults.
  • Enhance operational safety by isolating high-voltage circuits from low-voltage control equipment . In practice, PTs can be configured for both measuring and metering purposes, sometimes combined in a single unit, and are mounted either directly on the busbar or within a dedicated compartment in switchgear . Proper integration ensures reliable operation, accurate readings, and protection of both the busbar and connected equipment.
