Types of Aerial Optical Cables

  1. All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) Cable: A non-metallic cable that supports its own weight without a messenger strand, suitable for long spans and near power lines due to electrical isolation .
  2. Figure-8 Cable: Combines a fiber optic core with an integrated steel messenger in a figure-eight cross-section, allowing single-pass installation over moderate spans .
  3. Lashed Cable: Fiber optic cable lashed to a pre-installed messenger strand, flexible for adding fibers to existing aerial networks .
  4. Catenary or Suspension Cable: Uses an existing support wire to carry the fiber, ideal when a messenger line is already in place .
  5. OPGW (Optical Ground Wire): All-metal cable used on power lines, combining data transmission with lightning protection .

Installation Considerations

  • Route Planning: Survey the path, check ground conditions, and obtain permits from local authorities before installation .
  • Pole Preparation: Poles must be “made ready” for cable attachment, ensuring proper clearance from electrical and other telecom cables .
  • Sag and Tension: Each span must be analyzed for cable weight, span length, and messenger size. Sag is typically limited to less than 2% of span length, and tension should not exceed 30% of the cable's minimum breaking strength .
  • Clearance: Cables must be high enough to avoid obstacles, traffic, and vegetation, with additional separation from trees in adverse weather conditions .
  • Hardware: Use dead-end fixtures, cable lashing hardware, showshoe turnarounds, and secure splice closures with service loops respecting the cable's minimum bend radius .

  • Weather Resistance: Cables must withstand wind, ice, UV exposure, and mechanical stress .
  • Workmanship: Install cables neatly and securely to maintain network reliability and aesthetics .
  • Inspection and Maintenance: Aerial installations allow easier inspection but require periodic checks for sag, tension, and environmental damage .
