LC Fiber Optic Patch Cord Making Method

The LC fiber optic patch cord is manufactured through a precise process involving material selection, fiber preparation, connector assembly, polishing, and rigorous testing to ensure high optical performance.

Material Selection and Preparation

The process begins with selecting high-quality optical fibers, jackets, and LC connectors. LC connectors use a 1.25 mm ferrule, which allows high-density applications and secure push-pull latching . Jackets are typically made from PVC or LSZH materials to provide mechanical protection and environmental stability. The fiber is cut to the required length using automated machines, and the outer jacket and buffer coating are stripped to expose the bare fiber. The fiber is then cleaned with alcohol to remove dust and residues .

Connector Assembly

The bare fiber is carefully inserted into the LC connector ferrule, which has been pre-filled with epoxy. The assembly is cured in an oven to secure the fiber within the ferrule. After curing, the connector housing and strain relief boot are assembled. This step requires precision to ensure proper alignment and minimal insertion loss .

Polishing and End-Face Preparation

The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic polishing machines to achieve a smooth, defect-free surface. Ultrasonic cleaning is often used to remove any remaining debris. The polished end-face is inspected under a 400x microscope to detect scratches, contamination, or misalignment . LC connectors may be polished as UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) or APC (Angled Physical Contact) depending on the application.

Testing and Quality Assurance

Each patch cord undergoes insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) testing to ensure optical performance meets industry standards. Interferometers may be used to inspect the connector end-face and verify alignment. Additional tests may include fiber length verification and mechanical durability checks to ensure long-term reliability .

Final Assembly and Packaging

After passing all tests, the LC patch cords are labeled, packaged, and prepared for shipment. Some designs, such as uniboot duplex LC patch cords, allow both fibers to be carried in a single cable, reducing bulk and simplifying installation .

Summary

The LC fiber optic patch cord manufacturing process emphasizes precision, cleanliness, and quality control at every stage—from material selection to final testing. This ensures low insertion loss, stable return loss, and reliable performance in high-density networking environments, data centers, and telecom applications .
