Cable tray splicing methods

Cable tray splicing involves preparing, cutting, aligning, securing, and finishing the tray sections to ensure structural integrity and proper cable management.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Wrench and drill
  • Metal cutting tool or saw
  • Flexible horizontal adjustable splice plates (or standard splice plates)
  • Bolts, nuts, and washers
  • Measuring tape and marker
  • Safety equipment (gloves, goggles)

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Prepare the Cable Tray and Splice Plates Determine the desired alignment or angle for the splice. Lay out the cable tray sections and splice plates, ensuring all hardware is available and supports are within 24 inches (600 mm) of the splice per NEMA VE2 standards . 2. Mark and Cut the Cable Tray Measure and mark the tray where cuts are required to fit the installation. Use a metal cutting tool to make precise cuts, taking care to avoid rungs or remove any that interfere with the splice . 3. Align the Tray Sections Position the tray sections together with the splice plate. Ensure the edges are flush and the tray is level. For adjustable splice plates, set the desired angle before securing . 4. Secure the Splice Plate Attach the splice plate using bolts, nuts, and washers. Tighten all hardware evenly to maintain alignment and structural integrity. Check that the tray is stable and properly supported . 5. Verify Support and Clearance Ensure that the spliced section has adequate support on both sides and that the tray maintains proper clearance for cables. Adjust as necessary to comply with design specifications . 6. Cable Management and Finishing Once the tray is spliced, route cables carefully, using rungs or tie points to secure them. Avoid sharp bends and maintain the recommended bend radius. For fiber-optic trays, additional steps include wrapping, securing, and protecting fibers in splice trays . 7. Inspection and Testing Inspect the splice for alignment, tightness, and support. Confirm that cables are properly secured and that the tray system meets load and safety requirements . Following these steps ensures a safe, reliable, and code-compliant cable tray splice, suitable for both power and communication cabling applications.
