Fiberglass Tail Winding

Fiberglass tail winding is a filament winding process where resin-impregnated fiberglass fibers are precisely wound around a rotating mandrel to create strong, lightweight hollow structures.

Overview of the Process

Fiberglass tail winding, or filament winding, involves rotating a mandrel while continuously applying resin-saturated fiberglass rovings in a controlled pattern to build up layers of composite material . The mandrel defines the internal shape of the part, and the fibers are laid at specific angles to achieve desired mechanical properties. Steep winding angles provide hoop strength, ideal for resisting internal pressure, while shallow angles enhance axial strength and stiffness .

Materials and Resin Systems

The process uses continuous fiberglass fibers embedded in a specialized epoxy or polyester resin matrix . The resin ensures adhesion between fibers and contributes to the structural integrity of the final product. Some processes use pre-impregnated fibers (tow-preg) to improve handling and reduce slippage during winding .

Winding Techniques

Fiberglass tail winding can employ various techniques:

  • Helical winding: Fibers are applied at an angle along the length of the mandrel.
  • Hoop winding: Fibers are wrapped circumferentially for maximum pressure resistance.
  • “S” wraps: Two static bars spread the fiber evenly across the mandrel surface, improving uniformity .
  • In-plane (polar) winding: The fiber-delivery carriage moves in a polar path relative to the rotating mandrel, optimizing fiber placement and reducing internal stress . Multiple layers with different winding angles can be applied to tailor strength and stiffness to specific load requirements .

Curing and Finishing

After winding, the composite is heat-cured to harden the resin and lock the fibers in place. Once cured, the mandrel is removed, leaving a seamless, hollow fiberglass structure . The resulting parts are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and electrically insulating, making them suitable for demanding applications.

Applications

Fiberglass tail-wound components are widely used in:

  • Pipes and ducts for chemical, water, and wastewater systems .
  • Pressure vessels and storage tanks .
  • Electrical and military equipment, such as interrupter tubes and radome housings .
  • Transportation and industrial components requiring high strength-to-weight ratios .

Advantages

  • High strength-to-weight ratio compared to metals.
  • Customizable mechanical properties through winding angle and layer design.
  • Corrosion and chemical resistance, suitable for harsh environments.
  • Precision and repeatability with CNC-controlled winding machines . Fiberglass tail winding remains a versatile and efficient method for producing hollow composite structures with tailored performance characteristics, widely adopted across industrial, military, and commercial applications.
