Cut fiber optic cold connectors

A fiber optic cold connector allows quick, field-ready termination by stripping, cutting, and snapping the fiber into a connector without fusion splicing.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Fiber optic cold connector kit (includes connector, snap rings, and cutting knife)
  • Fiber stripper
  • Alcohol wipes or cotton
  • Cleaver or precision cutting tool
  • Protective gloves and safety glasses

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Install the Cold Connector Place the cold connector in a stable position and ensure the snap rings on both sides are open. Snap down the middle slot to prepare for fiber insertion .
  2. Strip the Fiber Remove about 3 cm of the outer jacket from the fiber using a fiber stripper. Carefully expose the bare fiber without nicking the glass. Clean the stripped fiber with alcohol to remove any contaminants .
  3. Cut the Fiber Insert the fiber into the cutting knife or cleaver and cut approximately 1.4 cm of the fiber. Ensure the cut is clean and perpendicular to the fiber axis to minimize optical loss .
  4. Insert the Fiber into the Connector Snap the bare fiber into the middle snap ring of the cold connector. Push the side snap rings tightly to secure the fiber. Repeat the stripping, cleaning, and cutting process for the other fiber end and insert it into the opposite side of the connector .
  5. Test the Connection After both fibers are secured, test the optical connection for continuity and signal loss. Proper insertion should result in minimal splice loss, ensuring efficient light transmission .

Tips for Reliable Termination

  • Always use high-quality, dedicated fiber tools to avoid damaging the fiber .
  • Ensure the cleave angle is less than 0.5° relative to perpendicular for optimal performance .
  • Keep stripped fibers in protective sleeves until insertion to prevent contamination or breakage .
  • Avoid excessive force when snapping fibers into the connector to prevent micro-cracks.
