Laying out cable trays

Proper cable tray installation requires careful planning, correct tray selection, secure mounting, organized cable laying, and adherence to safety and electrical standards.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, plan the cable tray route based on site layout, clearance, and load requirements. Review approved shop drawings to determine tray lengths, bends, and risers, and ensure all materials match the approved submittals. Inspect trays, ladders, and fittings for damage, and store them horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports to prevent moisture or sunlight damage .

Tray Selection and Sizing

Choose the appropriate tray type: ladder trays for airflow and heavy cables, perforated trays for lighter loads, or solid-bottom trays for protection. Calculate tray width and depth based on cable count, type, and spacing, ensuring the tray is not overfilled (typically max 40–50% of capacity) to prevent overheating .

Mounting and Support

Secure trays using wall brackets, cantilever supports, or ceiling suspension systems. Standard support spacing is usually 1.5–3 meters, depending on tray type and load. Ensure trays are level, straight, and properly aligned, using connectors and fittings for long runs. For GI trays, handle carefully to avoid coating damage .

Cable Laying

Lay cables neatly, grouping by voltage and function, and use cable ties or straps to maintain organization. Leave slack for expansion or future adjustments. Avoid excessive bending to prevent insulation damage, and ensure cables are fixed at regular intervals .

Grounding and Bonding

For metal trays, bonding and grounding are essential. Use proper bonding jumpers across tray sections to maintain electrical continuity and comply with safety standards .

Labeling and Documentation

Label all cables clearly for identification and troubleshooting. Maintain updated documentation and wiring maps for future maintenance and audits .

Inspection and Maintenance

Perform a final walkthrough to check for loose clamps, misalignment, overfilled sections, or unsupported spans. Routine maintenance should include checking for corrosion, loose wires, or broken clamps to ensure long-term reliability . By following these steps—planning, correct tray selection, secure mounting, organized cable laying, grounding, labeling, and inspection—you ensure a safe, efficient, and maintainable cable tray system compliant with electrical standards such as BS EN 61537 .
