Single-mode fiber (SMF) has a narrow core (8–10 µm) designed for long-distance, high-speed transmission using laser diodes at wavelengths like 1310 nm, 1490 nm, or 1550 nm . Dual-mode fiber typically refers to systems using either single-fiber BiDi (bidirectional) or dual-fiber setups, where BiDi uses one strand for both transmit and receive via WDM, and dual-fiber uses separate fibers for TX and RX . Multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core (50–62.5 µm) and is optimized for short distances with LED or VCSEL light sources .

Interoperability Considerations

  1. Fiber Type Matching: Single-mode transceivers should be used with single-mode fiber. Connecting SM transceivers to multimode fiber may allow a link to light up but will result in high attenuation, CRC errors, and unreliable performance, often limiting usable distance to under 100 meters . Best Practices for Reliable Interoperation

  • Always match fiber type to transceiver type (SMF with SM transceivers, MMF with MM transceivers).
  • For BiDi systems, ensure correct wavelength pairing at each end.
  • Use dual-fiber systems for simplicity and easier troubleshooting when fiber strands are available.
  • Verify optical budget and distance against transceiver specifications.
  • Keep connectors clean and properly aligned to minimize signal loss .
