Fiber Types

Singlemode Fiber (SMF) is ideal for long-distance backbone connections, capable of transmitting data over tens of kilometers with minimal signal loss, making it suitable for 10G to 100G+ networks . Multimode Fiber (MMF) is optimized for short-distance applications, such as within data centers or enterprise campuses. OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5 fibers differ in core size and bandwidth, with OM4 and OM5 supporting higher speeds and longer distances for short-range links .

Cable Constructions

• Color Coding: Helps identify fiber type and OM rating for proper installation; outdoor cables are typically black for UV protection .

Connectors and High-Density Solutions

• MTP®/MPO Connectors: Support multiple fibers in a single connector, ideal for high-density data centers and backbone layers, enabling 40G, 100G, 400G, and up to 800G transmission .
• Active Optical Cables (AOCs): Integrate fiber and transceivers for short switch-to-switch connections, eliminating separate connectors .

Performance Considerations

• Bandwidth and Speed: Fiber supports higher bandwidth and faster data rates than copper, with minimal signal loss over long distances .
• EMI Immunity: Fiber does not conduct electricity, making it immune to electromagnetic interference .
• Distance: Singlemode fibers are preferred for links over 2 km, while multimode fibers are suitable for distances up to several hundred meters .
