Fiber optic sensor for measuring liquid transmittance

Fiber optic sensors can measure liquid transmittance by detecting changes in light propagation through the liquid using interferometry, Bragg gratings, or other optical techniques.

Measurement Principles

Fiber optic sensors (FOS) for liquid transmittance operate by monitoring how light interacts with the liquid. Intrinsic sensors use the optical fiber itself as the sensing element, where the light signal is modulated by the liquid's optical properties, while extrinsic sensors transmit light to an external sensing region and detect changes externally. Common techniques include:

  • Fabry–Perot Interferometry (FPI): Measures phase changes in light reflected within a cavity; highly sensitive to refractive index and transmittance variations in the liquid, enabling precise monitoring over long periods without drift or maintenance .
  • Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG): The Bragg wavelength shifts when the fiber is exposed to a liquid, allowing detection of changes in refractive index or absorption, which correlates with transmittance .
  • Long-Period Gratings (LPG) and Multimode Interference: These methods exploit wavelength-dependent light coupling to detect liquid properties, suitable for multi-point or distributed sensing .

Advanced Techniques

  • Multiplexed Sensing: Multiple sensors along a single fiber can monitor several points simultaneously. Machine learning models, such as deep neural networks, can resolve overlapping signals and improve accuracy in multi-point measurements .
  • Temperature-Dependent Methods: Some systems, like NASA's fiber optic sensing system, use a resistive heater to induce local temperature changes along the fiber. The cooling rate differs between liquid and gas, allowing precise determination of liquid boundaries and transmittance characteristics .

Advantages

  • High Sensitivity and Accuracy: Fiber optic sensors can detect minute changes in transmittance and refractive index, with some systems achieving sub-millimeter resolution .
  • Robustness: Immune to electromagnetic interference, lightning, and harsh environments, making them suitable for industrial, chemical, and remote applications .
  • Long-Term Stability: Many designs are drift-free and require minimal maintenance, ideal for continuous monitoring .

Applications

  • Industrial Process Monitoring: Chemical, oil, and water reservoirs where precise liquid transmittance or level measurement is critical .
  • Cryogenic and Aerospace: Monitoring fuel or cryogenic liquids with high accuracy using distributed fiber Bragg sensors .
  • Remote or Hazardous Environments: Solar-powered or battery-operated fiber optic systems can operate in locations without mains power . Fiber optic sensors for liquid transmittance combine precision, robustness, and flexibility, making them suitable for both laboratory and industrial applications where conventional electrical sensors may fail.
