Fiber optic sensing technology uses optical fibers to detect environmental changes like temperature, strain, and vibration, enabling continuous, long-distance monitoring for industrial, structural, an...
Fiber optic sensing (FOS) relies on the behavior of light traveling through optical fibers. When light passes through a fiber, any changes in temperature, pressure, strain, or vibration slightly alter the light's properties, such as intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time. Specialized instruments detect these changes, effectively turning the fiber into a continuous sensor along its entire length, sometimes spanning hundreds or thousands of kilometers . This distributed sensing allows for real-time monitoring without direct access to the measurement points.
